The diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States over the years have been marred by ups and down, progressive and regressive character. This paper examined the diplomatic relations between both countries under the Goodluck Jonathan and General Buhari’s administration (2011-2021). The paper focused on both countries diplomatic relations specifically on pandemic response and health, bilateral economic engagement, educational and cultural exchanges and peace and security engagement. Anchoring the paper’s theoretical review on trait theory of the leadership, the paper reviewed the collected historical data and conducted a comparative analysis of Goodluck’s administrations’ foreign relations with the United States (2011-2015) and that of his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari (2015-2021). The review revealed that Goodluck and Buhari shuttle diplomacy is yet to achieve a convincing impact on the international community in terms of establishing a strong foreign relation with the U.S and the challenges of Nigeria's foreign relations is how to overcome its integrity crisis, and thereby securing the desired respect for its citizens internationally. This paper further revealed that Buhari's foreign relation with the United States has more impact on Nigeria's economy than that of Goodluck administration, even though the challenges are still present in the Buhari administration such as the Boko-Haram insurgency, unemployment, farmers-headmen crises, kidnapping, police brutality, and so on. The paper recommended that for Nigeria to promote a viable national interest it must pursue and promote a dynamic and assertive foreign relation with the United States and other big nations of the world.

Sports as an Instrument of Foreign Policy Under the Military Rule in Nigeria: 1976-1996Olugbile David Olaleye
December 28, 2023•DOI: 10.52589/AJLPRA-OWS2LXU8•Volume 6 Issue 2•1,483 views
The importance and popularity of sports among the nations of the world is huge. Sports are among the few common denominators for all the nations of the world irrespective of their respective political ideologies and religious inclinations. Through sports, enemies in political and ideological realms can compete between and among each other in an atmosphere of peace. Over the years, world leaders have used sports as an instrument of foreign policy. They do that in both positive and negative ways. Sports are deployed positively when they are used to boost friendship or to support a noble cause and they are used negatively when they are deployed as an instrument of sanctions. This paper shows how sports were used as an instrument of foreign policy in Nigeria by three military regimes of Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida and Sanni Abacha. Olusegun Obasanjo's regime pulled out Nigeria's Olympic contingents from participating in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada. Ten years later, the regime of Ibrahim Babangida led other Anglophone countries to boycott the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland; and in 1996 General Sanni Abacha stopped the Super Eagles from defending the title they won in the previous edition of the African Cup of Nations. Details of these boycotts and their political implications are discussed in this paper.

Foreign Policy: Character of Nigeria’s President in Foreign Relationship (Case of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan)Faruk Abdullahi
June 26, 2023•DOI: 10.52589/AJSSHR-ZXS7DSEN•Volume 6 Issue 3•1,875 views
This piece of write-up is aimed at examining whether or not Nigeria’s foreign policy under former President Goodluck Jonathan contributed to improving the image of Nigeria globally. The study reveals that Nigeria’s foreign policy over the years has been greatly sabotaged by inconsistencies and ambiguities. The study also shows that more than external challenges, it is the internal challenges that are dampening Nigeria’s attainment of positive international image and national transformation. Some of those challenges include leadership crisis, corruption, insurgency and terrorism amongst others. It is therefore recommended that major reorganization of the foreign services, such that positions in the diplomatic corps and other key positions will no longer be politicized and the government should integrate professional international public relations practitioners in its interactions with the international community at large, in order to effectively boost the global image of Nigeria.

The Post Cold War External Environment and Nigeria Foreign PolicyDr. Ukiyedeikimie Ugo Moses
February 17, 2023•DOI: 10.52589/AJSSHR-PKGZ6I7O•Volume 6 Issue 1•1,895 views
This paper examines some important post Cold War changes in the external environment that have contributed to changes in Nigeria’s foreign policy. The external environment of foreign policy is the totality of extraneous factors that influence and shape a country’s foreign policy. The international system was remarkably altered by the historic end of the Cold war. The post Cold War facilitated changes in the international system that have made international relations more complex and challenging. Globalisation, international pressures for democratisation and respect for human rights; changes in the international system and Nigeria’s commitments to bilateral and multilateral agreements were identified as some of the external sources of influence on the country’s foreign policy. These developments have challenged and tremendously altered the dynamics of Nigeria’s foreign policy. Neo-liberal theory was employed as the framework of analysis. Data were sourced from secondary sources: books, journals, newspapers, magazines and the Internet.

United States Foreign Policy on Iran’s Nuclear Programme: From Bush to Trump AdministrationAdeleke Olumide Ogunnoiki; Ademola Adefisayo Adeyemi
March 2, 2021•Volume 4 Issue 1•1,571 views
The Islamic Republic of Iran is a sovereign state strategically sitting astride the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf in the Middle East. In the late 1950s, the United States was of great assistance to Iran in starting its nuclear programme for peaceful purposes. But in the 1990s, Iran secretly began to build nuclear facilities which an exiled opposition group disclosed to the world in 2002. The revelation added to the fear of the United States and some European and Middle Eastern countries that Iran intends to have nuclear weapons or at least the capability to make them. Hence, the United States under President George W. Bush Jnr pursued a foreign policy aimed at reining Iran’s uranium enrichment. This goal, to a large extent, was achieved following the conclusion of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) during President Barack Obama’s administration. Unfortunately, his successor, President Donald Trump, pulled the United States out of the said nuclear deal in 2018. This paper examines United States foreign policy on Iran’s nuclear programme from January 2002 to January 2021. For the study, the historical approach was adopted, and data were collected from secondary sources. The paper concludes that the United States is back to square one vis-à-vis its foreign policy on Iran’s nuclear programme.
