December 5, 2020•Volume 3 Issue 3•1,739 views
The aim of this study was to establish the determinants that influence the growth of second-hand products enterprises. Small business enterprises (SBEs) are faced with threat of failure with past statistics indicating that three out of five fail within the first few months. The second-hand products enterprises studied were appraised with respect to the financial features and non-financial features that influence growth. The objective was achieved by employing descriptive research design. The data was analyzed using frequency tables, bar and pie charts and graphs. Estimation of the inferential statistics showing the regression coefficient results and the Pearson chi-square test of relationship was also conducted. The findings established that most of second hand products businesses were experiencing minimal expansion. Inadequate managerial skills, rise in trade competition and constraints in accessing finance were established as significant in influencing the slow growth of these small business enterprises. The study exclusively recommends that public policy makers and stakeholders should team up and provide business training programmes geared at improving management skills to the entrepreneurs and employees of these businesses, and help avail financial assistance which could be channeled through SBEs member groups.

This study examines the effect of proper placement during internship on office technology and management education (OTME) students’ acquisition of model office technologies skills in Federal College of Education (Tech.), Omoku, Rivers State. Two specific purposes, two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study using a post-test, randomised group. The study population was made up of 41 OTME NCE I students during the 2018/2019 academic session. All the OTME NCE I students were used for the study and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group was properly placed in business centres where model office technologies can be found while the control group was allowed to select their internship place. A checklist titled “Model Office Technologies Utilization Skills Observational Checklist (MOTUSOC)’ was used for data collection. The list was validated by two experts, one of measurement and evaluation and the other of OTME. Test-retest method and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) to obtain the r-value of 0.90 for the instrument’s reliability. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean, grand mean and independent t-test to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings show a clear difference in the extent of model office technologies skills acquired by OTME students properly placed in business centres from those allowed to choose their place of attachment for their internship. There is also no difference in the extent of model office technologies skills acquired by male and female OTME students properly placed in business centres. The finding also show that there is a significant difference in the extent of model office technologies skills acquired by OTME students properly placed in business centres and those allowed to choose their place of attachment for their internship. There is also no significant difference in the extent of model office technologies skills acquired by male and female OTME students properly placed. Recommendation made among others is that OTME department should canvass for the need to appoint departmental based internship programme coordinators who would work with College based internship coordinator to achieve the proper placement of students in workplaces where they can acquire important office technologies utilization skills.

Job creation aspiration is essential for driving entrepreneurship, reducing unemployment and promoting sustainable economic growth and development. This study examined the influence of digital literacy skills on job creation aspiration among Office Technology and Management (OTM) students in public polytechnics in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study was guided by Expectancy Value Theory and Digital Literacy Framework. Survey research design was employed and the population comprised 468 HND I & II OTM students across three public polytechnics offering OTM program at HND level in Ogun State, Nigeria. A sample size of 216 respondents was selected from the population using Taro Yamane formula and stratified sampling technique to ensure representation. The study has three objectives from which two research questions and an hypothesis were formulated. Structured questionnaire was adapted for data collection and data analysis was conducted using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that digital literacy skills exert a weak yet significant and positive influence on job creation aspiration (Adjusted R2 = 0.201, F(1,210) = 54.107, p < 0.05). It was concluded that digital literacy skills are instrumental in shaping the job creation aspirations of OTM students. The study recommended among others that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) should revise the national OTM curriculum to make advanced digital literacy mandatory components, ensuring nationwide consistency.
