Culture Theory Matters
Abstract
This paper examines honor-based (H-B) and dignity-based (D-B) cultures both as theoretical concepts and as social aggregates. It begins with a defense of the ‘typological’ approach, grounding it in metaphysical precepts. An extensive discussion of ‘dimensions’ introduces variations observed between honor-based and dignity-based cultures, the latter terms there introduced and defended. Words used in common between the two cultural types but holding different connotations are also examined, with select treatment given to trust-acceptance, envy-jealousy and shame-guilt pairs. Evidence in traditional cultures links aspects of behavior to dignity-based culture in the form of hypomanic traits. Disparate ways of viewing the institution of the ‘office’ reveal how cross-cultural dialogues can find common ground.

Street Hawking And The Girl Child In Northern Nigeria: A Study Of Some Selected Areas In Wudil Town, Wudil Local Government Area Of Kano State
Abstract
Street hawking is a global phenomenon and widespread in Nigeria over the years. This cuts across every section of the society including gender. However, the involvement of the Girl-child in this infamous activity is specifically common in northern Nigeria today, particularly in Wudil local government of Kano state. Here, it is very common to see young school aged girls between 5 - 17 years hussling in the streets hawking. The various challenges that these young girls face is no doubt highly unacceptable to any responsible society. More so considering the highly negative effects of this to the development of the society. Urgent steps are therefore needed to tackle this problem before it gets out of hand. Although the authorities have made concerted efforts to stemp the tide, the problem has persisted over time. Infact, if effective measures were not taken to drastically checkmate the problem in due time, the future consequences may better be real than imagine. Therefore, all hands of stakeholders must be on deck to finally nip it in the bud. This study focused on street hawking and the girl-child in some selected areas of Wudil town in Wudil, Kano state. It utilised both quantitative and qualititative methods of social research to determine the causes of street hawking by the girl-child in the area and society as a whole. The main objective is to identify the causes and negative effects of street hawking on the development of both the girl-child and society and to suggest viable ways of resolving the protracted problem so as to restore order and progress. The study discovered that the involvement of young girls in street hawking in Wudil, Kano state and northern Nigeria has a direct link with failures of social institutions like the family and the socioeconomic conditions of the people in the area which has suffered prolonged neglect by the authorities. Thus, the study argued that until the gap in the social structure of the society is drastically adressed, the problem and its concomitant negative effects may perpetuate. The study made some farreaching recomendations as pernacea to the problem

Migration, Displacement and Care: The Christian Imperative (Matt 25,34-40)
Abstract
Man is always on the move for better life. The history of humanity could be said to be a chronicle of migration. Migration has made history and history has created the circumstances for varied and complex forms of migration. Every culture, every tribe has a story regarding how they settled in their location, though some may sound only mythological. America owned originally by the Red Indians is today a country of mixed races. Early colonization of Africa and other parts of the world are all forms of migration. In the bible the story is not different. After the fall in Gen 3, Adam and Eve migrated from the Garden of Eden. Gen 12,1 begins with God’s call to Abraham to leave his homeland and move to a strange land. The eventual Exodus experience all attest to migration as a necessity. In the New Testament, the parents of Jesus had no option than to migrate to Egypt in the face of danger. In Acts of the Apostles, the disciples dispersed to many places because of persecution. Migration is therefore part of man, but the border line is that migration comes as a necessity. Today, the world especially the Western world sees it as a taunting problem yawning for solution. The author of this paper believes that migration flows have been and continues to be important vectors of social, economic and cultural changes. He argues that Matt 25,34-41 challenges us with care as the ultimate solution to the issue of migration. The paper adopts exegetical lens to challenge the world leaders to eschew racism, nepotism and see every person as one. It is the belief of the author that if we see ourselves as one and take good care of every person, migration will no longer be a burden but a blessing. It also calls on world leaders to address the remote cause of migration than attacking migrants.

Evolutionary Trends and Emergence of Commercial Motorcycling Operations in Ibadan Metropolis
Abstract
The emergence of the commercial motorcycling has been considered a good experience as it has proved to be a source of support for economic survival for thousands of people in Ibadan metropolis. There is dearth of studies on the evolutionary trends and organizations of commercial motorcycling in Ibadan metropolis. Therefore, this study investigated evolutionary trends of commercial motorcycling operation in Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State. A case study design was adopted using qualitative method of data collection. A purposive sampling of 24 motorcycle units matched into 12 focus group discussions with the branch heads and union members of the motorcycle unions and the commuters across the city yielded the data. Primary and secondary data were collected using qualitative techniques. Data collected were content analysed based on the objectives. It was found that, the evolution of commercial motorcycling has been traced down to the increased human needs and urbanisation in the country after the Civil War and the failure of the public mass transit scheme in Nigeria between 1980 and 1990. Thus, organization of commercial motorcycling in Ibadan and Nigeria is under the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) and the All Nigerian Auto Bike Commercial Owners and Workers Association (ANACOWA) that are the existing active associations coordinating and protecting the interest of mercantile riders in Nigeria. As recommended, the governments at various levels (federal, state, and local) need to create employment opportunities as this will go a long way in reducing unemployment in Nigeria, particularly in Ibadan.

Watch and Listen to My Face: The Potential for Facial Communication in Human-Agent Interaction
Abstract
Most research around listenership in Human-Agent Interaction has focused on assessing listener feedback using participant utterances during interaction, narratives after interaction or posed facial actions. However, little attention is paid to spontaneous facial actions displayed when interacting with software agents in instruction-giving contexts. This paper reports a study aimed at developing a better understanding of the nature and communicative potentials of spontaneous facial actions displayed during these interactions. Forty-eight participants were tasked with assembling two Lego models using verbal instructions from a computer interface. The interface used three voices of which two were synthesised and one provided by a voice actor. A 24-hour-long multimodal corpus was built and marked instances analysed from these interactions. The results suggest that it is possible for humans to show their perceptions of agent identity through their facial actions as positive, negative or indifferent during interaction. Furthermore, there is a potential for formulating a theoretical basis for researching interaction in similar contexts. Findings suggest that agents enhanced emotive functionality may enhance Human-Agent interaction in emerging contexts, but this requires further research.
