Interest as Predictor of Academic Achievement of Secondary School Students in Physics
Abstract
The study examined the extent to which student interest can predict their academic achievement in physics amongst secondary school students in Anambra State Nigeria. The participants were 300 (134 males and 166 females) SSII students drawn from the 254 public secondary schools across the six education zones in Anambra state. The study adopted the correlational research design which is capable of predicting the relationships between dependent and independent variables in a study. The instruments used to collect relevant data from the students were Physics Interest Scale (PIS) and terminal continuous assessment results. The instruments were subjected to validity and reliability and found to be reliable at Cronbach Alpha coefficient of .87. Hierarchical regression technique was used for data analysis. The findings showed that student interest predicts about 57% of academic achievement scores of secondary school students in physics. The study thus concludes that students with an improved interest in physics science is expected to gain higher academic achievement in physics.

Influence of Parent-Child Relationship on Anti-Social Behaviour Among Senior Secondary School Adolescents in Damaturu Metropolis, Yobe State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study investigated into the influence of parent-child relationship on anti-social behaviour among senior secondary school adolescents in Damaturu Metropolis, Yobe State, Nigeria. Correlational and Ex-post-facto research designs were used in the study. The population of the respondents was 7115. The sample of 364 was drawn proportionately from four senior secondary schools in the metropolis using stratified sampling technique. The respondents were measured with relevant adapted instruments; Anti-social behaviour scale developed by Achenbach (1991) and Parent-child relationship scale developed by Roe and Siegelman (1965), the instruments were revalidated and pilot tested and the reliability index was found to be 0.67 and 0.73 respectively. Two research objectives with corresponding hypotheses were rise and guide the study. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance and for the data analysis, PPCM and t-test was used. The result showed that there was significant relationship between parent-child relationship and anti-social behaviour (r= 0.857; p<0.05) and gender is not in determining the influence of anti-social behaviour among the senior secondary school adolescents (male and female). In view of these findings, it was recommended that the parents need to teach, monitor the adolescents and give adequate emotional caring in term of peers’ selection in the society. This will help in reducing the problems of being misguided by the other peers in the society. Educational stakeholders should intensify their effort by organising seminars/workshop on the implications of parent-child relationship on the anti-social behaviour in the society. The curriculum planners should try in as much as possible to include in the scheme effective inculcation of moral education and development for the students. This will help to reduce the level of their involvement in anti-social acts behaviour in the country.

The use of Teaching and Learning Materials by Student-Teachers at St. Ambrose College of Education, Dormaa Akwamu in the Bono Region of Ghana
Abstract
Education is very crucial in the development of every nation, and Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs) play critical roles in the teaching and learning processes globally. The effectiveness of teaching and learning largely depends on proficiency of teachers to use appropriate TLMs effectively. The study focused on uncovering deficiencies and inefficiencies on the use of TLMs by student-teachers on practicum at St. Ambrose College of Education, Dormaa-Akwamu in the Bono Region of Ghana. The study was qualitative and it employed action research method. Observations and interviews were instruments used to gather data from 30 subjects. The purpose of this article was to identify problems that student-teachers face regarding the use of TLMs as a catalyst to induce learning. Identifying such anomalies on the part of the student-teachers is envisaged to expose the gaps that exist in teacher education so that appropriate intervention could be deployed to rectify the situation. The study revealed that student-teachers lack requisite knowledge and skills in TLMs design and utilization and it recommended that skill development in TLMs design and utilization should be integrated into teacher education in Ghana.

Extent of Understanding and Implementation of the Competency Based Approach (CBA) in Mathematics in Grammar and Technical Secondary Schools in Cameroon
Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to compare levels of mathematics teachers’ understanding and implementation of the CBA in grammar and technical secondary schools in the North West Region of Cameroon. The study adopted a survey research design. Using the Taro Yamane’s method, a sample of 153 mathematics teachers (60 from technical secondary schools and 93 from grammar secondary schools) was selected from a population of 248 mathematics teachers in the North West Region using the simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using a 25-itemised self-designed questionnaire. Cronbach alpha reliability indices for sections B and C of the questionnaire were found to be 0.82 and 0.85 respectively. Mean was used to answer the research questions and t-test to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that mathematics teachers in both grammar and technical secondary schools understand the Competency Based Approach to teaching mathematics only to a low extent. Furthermore, the extent to which mathematics teachers in grammar schools implement the CBA, though low, is significantly better than that of technical school mathematics teachers. It was therefore recommended among other things that many more training seminars on CBA related issues in mathematics should be organized by the Teachers’ Resource Center (TRC) in the North West Region, and that Inspectors of mathematics should carryout regular visits to monitor the implementation of the CBA in mathematics classrooms.
