Perception of Communication Scholars on Adoption and Usage of ChatGPT for Media Studies.
Abstract
ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) as an artificial intelligence (AI) tool has created a paradigm shift in the field of media studies by enhancing research efficiency, transforming teaching, and on the other hand, raising critical questions about authorship and algorithmic bias which has sparked concerns over ethical implications in media studies. This study therefore investigated communication scholars' views, concerns, and expectations regarding ChatGPT's integration into media studies through in-depth interview of 20 communication scholars purposively drawn from all communication scholars scattered in various universities within Anambra state, Nigeria. Findings revealed that most communication scholars in Anambra State, Nigeria, viewed ChatGPT as a beneficial tool for media studies sustainability regardless of the disadvantages inherent in its usage and are willing to adopt it as some have already put it into use for various activities in media studies. It is recommended that training programmes focused on AI literacy are essential to equip communication scholars with the necessary skills to engage with ChatGPT effectively.

The emergence of fake news presents a serious danger to the accuracy of information, public discourse, and social stability in a time when information is disseminated quickly through digital channels. Nigeria, with its diverse population and dynamic media landscape, faces unique challenges in combating the spread of misinformation. In the context of Nigeria, this study investigates how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a crucial tool in combating the threat of fake news and improving information verification procedures. The study looks into the state of fake news in Nigeria today and examines how it affects social cohesiveness, political stability, and public opinion. The study tries to identify the critical role that artificial intelligence (AI) can play in addressing the particular issues that disinformation poses in the Nigerian information environment. Assessing the Nigerian Diaspora Media Influence in the Homeland Media Turf: Complementary or Alternative Roles.
Abstract
in Nigeria, ascertaining whether the online diaspora news media represents an alternative news platform to the homeland audience. Also, it investigates whether the diaspora media's reportorial style and news processing differ from the homeland mainstream media system. The study adopts semi-structured interviews and qualitative content analysis for its methodology. The sample population for the semi-structured interview consists of twenty-seven respondents selected through the purposive sampling technique. For the content analysis, sixty-eight news stories from six news outlets, including diaspora and homeland online media platforms, were analysed. Findings highlight marked differences in the form, structure, and ethical approach of diaspora news and mainstream homeland media. Also, the study results show that citizens view the diaspora news sites as platforms that break and provide information the mainstream media may not report due to political interference and other operational restraints. In addition, the diaspora provides a discursive sphere for citizens to debate public matters freely without the stringent moderation mechanisms of mainstream media.

The sample size of 400 was determined using the Yard’s formula, and the multistage sampling technique was used to select the respondents for the study. The instrument for data collection was a self-developed structured questionnaire designed with a 4-point Likert scale structure. The data were analysed using frequency distribution and simple percentages. The findings of the study showed that residents of Akwa Ibom State are significantly aware of the dangers of Compressed Natural Gas sales and vending around residential areas. The study also showed that Customer Protection Council’s campaigns on the dangers of CNG residential area sales and vending has significant positive influence on residents’ awareness and attitudes. Appropriating Colours in Set Design for Children’s Theatre in Ghana.
Abstract
This paper illuminates the integral role of set design in children’s theatre, specifically exploring the infusion of colour from a child’s viewpoint to enrich their theatrical encounters. Informed by Schonmann’s and Weincek’s insights into children’s theatre and set design, and grounded in the experiential value of artistic methodology, this study employs a representational art concept to craft set designs that resonate with the sensibilities of young audiences. Through a focus group discussion with Ghanaian children aged eight to thirteen, a preference for polychromatic colour schemes emerged. Harnessing these preferences, the research develops a set design tailored to elevate the overall theatrical experience for children. Employing a formalistic approach, the study describes the incorporation of elements in the design and interprets the significance of colours. By understanding children’s colour perspectives, this research aims to convey their ideas, express emotions, and facilitate effective communication. Ultimately, the study empowers children as active participants in the theatrical experience, fostering interpretation, interaction, and questioning on their own terms.

Between Six and Half a Dozen: A Comparative Functional Analysis of Televised Political Advertisements of Incumbent Versus Challenger in the 2019 Presidential Election Campaigns in Nigeria.
Abstract
This study is a functional analysis of APC, and PDP political advertisements in the 2019 presidential election in Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive qualitative design with data collected from purposively selected NTA, AIT, TVC, and Channels which were the four major television networks in Nigeria in 2019. A population of 58 political advertisements were generated from the four television networks. The Australian online sample size calculator was used to determine the sample size of 50, at 95% CL and 0.5 CI. Twenty five political advertisements were randomly selected from APC, and PDP and randomly assigned to two graduate coders without political affiliation through number picks. Coder A coded 13 APC and 12 PDP while coder B coded 12 APC and 13 PDP political advertisements respectively. The coders achieved inter-coder reliability co-efficient of .80 on topic, and .82 on function respectively on Cohen’s kappa. Findings revealed the dominance of acclaims over attacks for both the incumbent (APC) and the challenger (PDP) contrary to previous findings. Despite this, PDP as the challenger still acclaimed less, attacked more, and defended less while APC, as the incumbent, acclaimed more, attacked less, and defended more. Topical analysis showed both APC, and PDP were more focused on image than policy contrary to previous findings for both incumbents and challengers which validates the development gap hypothesis. The study was anchored on the Functional Analysis Theory of Political Campaign Discuss (FATPCD).
