The objective of this study is to determine the effect of internal and external governance mechanisms on the sustainability of the microfinance institutions of the CamCCul network in Cameroon. The study is conducted on a sample of 34 MFIs of the network over the 7-year period from 2009 to 2015. The results show, on the one hand, that the MFI's adherence to the network’s Risk Management program significantly and positively affects the financial sustainability of MIFs measured by their operational self-sufficiency. On the other hand, we find that the ownership of UBC Bank shares by the MFI and the culture of the zone of activity positively and significantly affect the MIFs social sustainability measured by the number of active borrowers.

Macro-Institutional Quality and Capital Structure in Microfinance Institutions: A Global Dynamic Panel System-GMM AnalysisReindolph Osei-Anim; Joyce Ama Quartey; Stephen Banahena

Microfinance institutions (MFIs) operate in diverse institutional environments, but evidence on the relationship between national governance, financing choices and board composition remains inconclusive. This study examines whether institutional quality is associated with MFI capital structure and whether women's board representation moderates that association. It combines MIX Market financial and governance records with Worldwide Governance Indicators and World Development Indicators for 2010–2018. Dynamic relationships are estimated using collapsed two-step system GMM with Windmeijer-corrected standard errors, supported by alternative leverage measures and fixed-effects sensitivity checks. Aggregate institutional quality and its six governance dimensions show no statistically significant association with debt-to-equity in the main system-GMM estimates. The interaction between institutional quality and women's board representation is also insignificant. The debt-to-equity model produces an economically questionable adjustment estimate, while the borrowing model displays plausible persistence but fails important instrument-validity tests. A country-clustered fixed-effects estimate yields a negative institutional-quality association, demonstrating estimator sensitivity. The findings therefore do not establish a general institutional-quality effect on MFI financing. They underscore the importance of leverage measurement, sample composition and instrument diagnostics when assessing dynamic capital structure in microfinance.

The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector plays a vital role in the growth of the economies of developing countries. Similarly, microfinance facilities are crucial to MSMEs financial performance as they facilitate the growth and development of MSMEs. This study, therefore, investigates the effects of Microfinance on MSME performance in Jos metropolis of Plateau State. The research design is descriptive and employs the survey method. Simple random sampling techniques was adopted as a technique in selecting the 323 MSMEs that form the sample size of the study. A structured questionnaire was used in the collection of relevant data used for analysis. Data was presented through the use of frequency tables and Chi-square test was used to carry out the analysis. The study found that microfinance has a positive effect on sales revenue and profitability and non-current assets. The study recommends creating awareness especially for women on the importance of Microfinance in entrepreneurship development. The study also recommends that Plateau state government should set up and implement policies that will ease access to microfinance credit by MSMEs, especially from microfinance banks. The study also recommends the granting of more loans to women to increase the number of women engaged in entrepreneurship activities within Jos metropolis.
