Theoretical Issues in Human Resources Management: From Taylorism to Theory Z
Abstract
The human resources of any given organisation are the greatest assets that should be managed in order to attain desired performance goals. Thus, human resources management is the bedrock of all management activities in any formal work setting. In the bid to achieve organizational goals, there is need to manage the human resources with established knowledge which scientifically related methods yield. This is termed human resources management theory which is a system of interconnected propositions that condenses and organizes the knowledge about the social world, nay work organizations and explains the workings of the work organizations. Secondary data were garnered to elicit information for the analysis of the paper which presents relevant theories of industrial organizations and critically analysed them so as to acquaint us with the knowledge and effectiveness of the theories. This is essentially a metatheoretical schema for theories adopted in the motivation of human resources in order to attain deeper understanding of theories of human resources management.

Management in Man’s Environment: How Universal and yet Under-Observed
Abstract
Every university course is developed, taught and learned in the expectation that it will ultimately prove useful to the learner economically or in promoting personal understanding of, and adaptation to the natural and social environments of living and work relations. Management is no exception to this rule. However, because of the general ration that the course management is simple but scarily be sufficiently understood, let alone be made sufficiently relevant today –to – day life and work, the need exists for course lecturers in particular to be adequately equipped to negate these notions and to rather render the course understandable, enjoyable and useful. This paper provides some readily applicable working understandings of and applicative hints on the main branches of management. As an enrichment effort, the meaningful application of some selected information science, or information system – related tertiary level branches of management are also treated to pave the way for the more specially focused paper presentation.

Liquidity Management Practices of Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises in Lagos State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study investigated the extent of liquidity management practices among Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study made use of primary data and the population of the study comprised of 4,460 registered Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises in Lagos State based on the Nigerian government contacts database (2015). Using Taro Yamane’s formula, a sample size of 367 Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises was computed for questionnaire administration. In each Small and Medium Enterprises that was randomly sampled, questionnaires were administered to the respondents; Owner, Supervisor or Financial Manager who provided the necessary information on liquidity management practices of their firms. Data collected from the study were analysed with the use of appropriate descriptive statistics. The result of the study revealed that SMEs engaged in liquidity management practices such as cash budget (97%), bank account operation (77%), investment in current assets (67%), and making current assets available for immediate conversion into cash (71%). Use of mechanisms in the realisation of sundry debtors (64%) and collection of debts due (64%). The study, therefore, recommended that regulatory authorities should put in place an appropriate policy with compliance measures to check high volume cash transactions and cash hoarding prevalent in the economy.

Perceived Distributive Justice of Service Recovery and Post-recovery Satisfaction: A Study of Domestic Airline Customers in South West Nigeria
Abstract
This study examined perceived distributive justice of service recovery and post-recovery satisfaction: a study of domestic airline customers in south west Nigeria. The study adopted the perceived justice theory to service recovery with the three dimensions of justice underpinning the study’s conceptual framework/research model. Quantitative research design was employed. The unit of analysis comprised of domestic airline customers in south west geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Quota and purposive sampling were the sampling techniques and a sample of 1,998 respondents was statistically drawn using Cochran. Questionnaire was the research instrument; exploratory factor analysis through principal component extraction method was used to statistically measure construct validity while Cronbach Alpha was used to establish the reliability of the instrument. Hypothesized relationships in the path diagram resulting from the research model were tested using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with the aid of IBM®SPSS®AMOSTM25. The finding of this study showed that distributive justice had significant and positive influence on post-recovery satisfaction. It was recommended that airline companies operating in the zone should organize regular training programmes for their staff on how to work with emerging aviation technologies so as to minimize errors and reduce costs that are associated with compensation.

Organizational Culture as a Precursor to the Practice of Corporate Social Responsibility: A Conceptual Standpoint
Abstract
A harmonious relationship between business and society has been acknowledged to be an indispensible framework for a sustainable business performance. This is as no business venture can successfully operate without the society’s support, especially in the area of input resources and enabling environment creation which promotes business success and growth. Similarly, the extent to which such harmonious relationship is maintained will to a great extent depends on corporate social responsibility practices by organizations as means of given back to the society voluntarily. On this note, this study seeks to theoretically evaluate the influence of organizational culture in the promotion of corporate social responsibility practices. In line with this objective, literature on the meaning and nature of organizational culture and its dimensions were reviewed, followed by corporate social responsibility and its measures; there after we interlaced organizational culture and corporate social responsibility. Finally, the study concludes that corporate social responsibility display by organizations is a form of voluntary organizational behavior towards the society with the capacity to bring the organization cohesively close to its stakeholders and in the long run stimulates its goal attainment in a sustainable manner. We therefore recommend as follows: i) that organizations while in pursuit of their primary goals should also embrace CSR (ii) that organizations should identify stakeholders’ needs before adopting any given CSR approach.

An Assessment of the Impacts of the Pension System Reforms on Employees’ Performance and Retention in Nigeria Distilleries Limited, Lagos Nigeria
Abstract
Consequently, upon many decades of inefficient and corrupt pension management system in Nigeria, public servants in Nigeria dreaded retirement because of the reported plight of retirees who were seen dying on queues or living under the bridges at the Federal Capital City of Abuja. While an average worker in other parts of the world looks forward to a decent and enjoyable post-work life, Nigerians lived in fear of ageing and retirement resulting in several malpractices such as multiple declarations of age with intent to keep them at work far past the official retirement age. Factors arising from pension inadequacies, poor funding, embezzlements and long arrears especially in the public sector led to the initiatives for restructuring of the country’s pension system and the enactment of the Pension Reform Act of 2004 and its review Act of 2014. The reforms aimed at making pension administration more effective, efficient, to make and improve on the question of adequacy and fund security. However, key problems in the management of the new pension system involve the perception of the degree and significance of its impact and whether key objectives are satisfied according to the intent of the reforms. This study was designed to examine whether the reforms have contributed significantly to addressing employees' post-work-life concerns and how such assessments impact their performance. Specifically, the paper examines if a relationship exists between the new pension reform act and employee retention, as well as organizational performance using a sample of employees of Nigerian Distilleries Ltd. Three hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance, using the inferential statistics of Regression Analysis with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20). The findings show that there is a significant relationship between the New Pension Reform Act and employee’s performance. Also, the New Pension Reform Act has a positive effect on employee retention, compensation design must reflect this option in order to attract, motivate and retain employees. With further evidence that the pension system has the propensity to align the individual and corporate goals by increasing their job commitment, performance and motivation, the paper concludes that proper implementation of the provisions of the pension reform act is a prerequisite for achieving its objectives.

Perceived Influence of Entrepreneurial Intention on Business Success of Start-ups in Food and Beverage Sector of Rivers State
Abstract
This study investigated the perceived influence of entrepreneurial intention on the business success of start-ups in the food and beverage sectors in Rivers State. Two specific objectives, two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A descriptive survey using a quantitative approach was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of 1,167 small scale businesses across 23 local government areas of Rivers State who are registered with the State Internal Revenue. A sample of 117 small scale business owners in the food and beverage sector of Rivers State was selected using the purposive quota sampling technique. The sample consists of 60 supermarkets and 57 neighbourhood market stores in the business of distributing food and beverages. A self-designed structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The instrument was face validated by the researcher’s peers within Federal College of Education (Tech.), Omoku, Rivers State. The instrument was further subjected to reliability using Cronbach alpha to obtain a reliability index of 0.74 and 0.82 for sections A and B, with an average index of 0.78 which shows that the instrument is reliable based on data collected from 15 food and beverage start-ups supermarkets and neighbourhood stores from Bayelsa State. Data collected for the study were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean, cluster means and standard deviation to answer research questions. An independent t-test was used to test the hypotheses raised at a 0.05 level of significance. The major findings of the study revealed that supermarket and neighbourhood market stores startups in the food and beverage sector of Rivers State are of the opinion that entrepreneurial attitude and entrepreneurial experiences help to increase sales volume and enhance customers’ retention which was the proxies of business success in this study. The results also show that there is no significant difference in the opinion of the respondents on the perceived influence of entrepreneurial intention on the business success of startups in the food and beverage sector of Rivers State. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that entrepreneurs who want to succeed in the food and beverage sector of Rivers State should endeavour to render voluntary services in order to accumulate entrepreneurial experiences and develop the right entrepreneurial mindset for success.
